30th Jan Monday
I didnt check spelling or grammar. Oh well, I'm tired want to recover
Wake up: 08:00
Breakfast:
x2 Toast, banana, yogurt.
Wasn't enough though, was lacking energy by lunch time. Lacking alot.
Farm work:
Started: 09:10
Started with being told to:
Washdown dairy, collect reels from hay and silage, and put out some waratah's where the reel's were.
Anyway so I went about scraping starting washdown, started by scraping everything 'crap' towards the gutter and drains. Algud so far. But after one blockage in the lower pit for the dairy yard. Which I cleared, I thought sweet the water's moving again. I'll wash some more down into the pit. Second time I wasnt so lucky!
Sometime between starting washdown, I had managed to put enough down the pipes to block the system. Between the pits and to poo pond.
So after many attempts to clear it myself I gave up and ask for Ben's help. Which as you would expect didn't go down so well.
From there we found that there was a blockage, between the emergency overflow and the other side of the lane way. But we were wrong :-( And after many attempts to free the debri, I given for lunch. And left the hose pushed down the pipe and running to hopefully further loosen debri.
Finish: 13:50
Lunch:
Had leftovers from Robyn's spicy chicken dinner. Was quite good reheated, still spicy. Also everything tastes good after hard work on a empty stomach. During lunch it was pissing down! Mega windy and raining! Not the wimpy shower's I have got use to here. It was alot like Taupo heavy rain :-)
Start farm work.
Start: 15:00
After lunch, I went to check on the progess and found the water level had dropped around the emergency relief. Then checked the water tank, :-( not good, I could see the bottom of the tank! So rushed off to start the firefighter and get some water into the tank!
Then made a little more progress with getting more hose down the pipe. But not enough to ublock it, by now we've got so much hose down the pipe it's gone under the lane way, through many joints and joins the the pipe and pushed heaps of dirt sand crap grass and beep* down the pipe. Just moving and concentrating the blockage. at a point where no water is actually going down the pipe. Which is just the same as all morning! Yawn! And by the this time the body is really packing a sad!
Then Brad turns up, to help. We again look to find the problem, sus out a plan of attack, after I filled him in on what's happened this morning. This is just after Ben has got the herd into the Dairy yard. And hads started to milk. Great!
So Brad and I have another go at this DAM! blockage. And get some more pipe in. Not much more maybe 2 or 3 metres at most. And hasn't made the slightest difference to the blockage. Only thing is a whole lot of crap has been forced back up the pipe and is spilling out the emergency relief and is making a mess!
After Brad had gone threw all his ideas, situation still hasnt changed.
And he leaves, so I helped Ben milk. We had some problem cows again today!
If only cows were nice! And they walked up on command, stand and waited to get milked and then walked out of the dairy into their paddock without delay. Arrh, that would be the dream! If anyone knows how to do that, to a herd with alot of beep beep beep BEEPS!!!!!!! "Give me a call, love to hear from you"
And then did some more drain blockage attempts, and started the firefighter again.
Finish: Time 19:00
I had a lovely day on the farm today! NOOOOOOOOOOOOOTTTTTTTTTTTTT. Yes I'm crazy
Tea:
Stir fry chicken! Arrh :-) yum!
Good food, keeps the soul and heart ticking over very nicely!
I had a lie down before bed tonight, before I wrote this.
Goodnight!

28th Jan Sat
28th Jan Saturday
Breakfast:
x3 Weetbix. Becoming a usual now, when there's enough milk in the fridge. And I'm on a Dairy farm, who would think that?
Farm work, none.
Slept in this morning, then once Robyn and Ben were finsihed with the girls or the herd if you weren't educated. We headed off toward, Wilsons Promontory. But before we got to far, we stopped in Foster. to pick up some supplies. AKA food and drink for lunch :-)
Before we arrived we stopped to look at the map. As Robyn, driving, and Ben tried to figure out where they were going. I jumped out and had a look out towards, Bass Strait, Norman Island, Great Glennie Island, Dannerig Island, Citadel Island, and McHugh Island (-39.01533,146.298888). Once we had found 'the beach', we made our way down to the beach, after it taking a few moments to get a car park. (-39.021789,146.306405)
It was quite busy today, summer yawn! It's obvious here, Squeaky Beach, that you had to drive a long long way away from the city to enjoy somewhere by yourself.
After applying the trusty sunblock, I went for an explore.
(-39.023368,146.300644) Where I found rocky outcrop, around the corner was a small picturesque beautiful bay. With no one on it, prefect! But didn't get to carried away scaling cliffs alone down to the beach. Might save that adventure for when I've got some company, to enjoy it with.
Lunch:
Ham and coleslaw buns :-) classic! and a brownie slice which was massive :-) I quite like Foster cuisine.
Then went for a long swim in the surf. Prob about 2-3.5ft consistent. Max 4. Plenty people out enjoying themselves. Surfing, body surfing, playing around splashing the usual. And a few international worries too. Glad the surf wasn't any bigger, and the rips weren't pulling much. One indian family, gave me a bit of a worry. A young girl not much older than 7, body boarding feeling really safe because she between mum and the shore, who was swimming. But the water line was just below Mum's shoulders. And its pretty obvious she knows nothing about the sea. And swimming in surf, as they were in centre of the mouth of a rip. Which as tells me she hasn't had much swimming experience. I hope they don't cause too many headaches at Victorian patrolled beaches.
As we lift the beach, the day didn't end on a good note. Robyn and I had a good time at the beach swimming etc. But once we decided we would leave Ben had already had enough. Lame! I reckon it was because he hadn't brought his togs down to the beach. But he lift them in the car. Silly mistake, and because the carpark wasn't as close to the beach as they are in New Zealand. He didn't want to walk up to the car and get them. :-( So we drove home and it wasn't a happy trip home. But in respect it could have been worse.
Tea:
We had Mince & Taco's. Was yummy! After being so hot and bothered all day.
We watched Night at the Museum' its quite fun to watch. Good one for the kids.

26th Jan Thu
26th Jan Thursday
Slept in this morning, but had the mountain of dishes and laundry done by the time Ben and Robyn had finished milking.
Breakfast:
x3 Weetbix. Spagetti, ham & sliced chicken breast on toast! :-)
Man I had a great breakfast today on Australia Day!
Farm work, what farm work. It's a public holiday!
Robyn and I went for a drive today.
We drove to:
Port Franklinn
Toora
Barry Beach (and on the sign it wrote grenade and bomb. This port's barb-wired gated entrance with a perimeter patrol road, mhmm interesting).
Welshpool
Port Welshpool
Port Albert
Lunch:
At Port Albert Robyn and I made lunch at a local shop. 'The General Store' great name for a restaurant/cafe.
From the short time, we were there. I realised and recognised many things while there. Was cool to see a place like that, how it looked, how it was run.
Tea:
Lamb Roast tonight! Was delicious! Lots of everything, Meat Vege and Gravy!
All what a man could ask for :-) Girl's are you listening. A man's heart is found a little lower than our actual heart beat.

Water problems, on the paddock near the house and besides the road. It was dry.
So moved herd, into a 'Home block' paddock, with water :-). sounds simple, but on lease land things dont get done! Ever!
Was a very hecticate time this morning, lots of stress. Starting the see the real, BS that's happening here. And how different peoples interests make such an arrangement like Ben and Robbyn are in complicated and furstrating.

27th Jan Fri
27th Jan Friday
Wake up: 07:15
Out of Bed: 07:40
Breakfast:
x4 Weetbix. After I'd worked till 12:00 and not had enough food or water to drink all morning, made functioning hard! Silly me and my crap preparation for the day!
Farm work:
Started: 08:40
Clearing out the tractor shed, and all it's 3 bays. As we are expecting that delivery of hay.
But today, I scraped all last seasons hay into piles for Ben, where he used the tractor and bucket to remove and dump elsewhere.
Then did the same again on the calving shed, that was a pain. As Ben and I had to work around all the calving separation structure.
Next, I shift another gate left out in the weather for the environment to ruin it!
Rusted out! Missing supports & only steel! Great to see that $ was well spent here. cough!
Same story for a old trough, which was homemade, which I don't have a problem with, but I do have a problem with the exposed welds. On galvanized steel sheet, well done! I'm sure whoever did make the trough would know something about metals and what happens if you don't prepare, treat and finish them correctly.
Come on how do they expect it to last? Didn't think busy farmers had the time to do things twice.
Had another drive with the tractor today, seriously. It makes me worried driving something worth so much. And which can damage so much in just a single moment.
Finish: 12:00
Lunch:
I had a banana and carrot. Then Ben and Robyn came home from town, with Fish n' Chips! :-)
Awesome! That kept me happy, for the rest of the afternoon. It made me feel some much better than this morning. Just with some food and water. Ha simple!
Start farm work.
Start: 13:10
Sprayed & grubbed three paddocks. Plenty of thistle to deal with. But was glad it wasn't as giant as the thistle's that were on the lease land.
Next, put 3 waratah's up along a sagging fence line, to prop the electric wire up. The cows were just walking over it. Only because of some battens holding it up :-) excellent!
Next, move herd into the "dairy'. Milked, I was alot more confident around those girls legs this afternoon today. Ha
Finish: 17:10
I felt alot better after work today, compared to yesterday and this morning. :-)
Tea:
We had a spicy and hot chicken & vege meal, on rice.
Ben and I watching 'The Last Starfighter' lol.

07:15 Woke up Tired want to go back to bed, alot! I've only got 6.5/7 hours sleep fpr the last few days.
07:40 Out of Bed Last night was really hot, sleep with the window open and the fan on alnight.
Breakfast:
Cereal + Fruit.
Start farm work: 08:30.
Helped Brad put the plumbing on troughs. Digging, filling in trenches.
Lunch:
Cracker's & cheese. Pizza, Meat Lover's.
Helped Brad put the plumbing on troughs. Digging, filling in trenches.
Setup the firefighter water pump generator, pumping water from the dam into the resevior tanks, for filling troughs and removing the air in pipes.
Refuel firefighter. 14:30
Setup paddock and closed all gates for after 'Dairy' and moving herd.
Move herd into 'Dariy' on a low tank of gas on the quad, that was silly!
Helped Ben milk in 'Dairy'.
We're having big water problems at the moment, need more water in the troughs. Need more water in the tank. But the added pressure from the firefighter is blowing out fittings, pumps, plumbing and filters in the 'Dairy'.
Washed out 'Dairy'.
Tea:
Chicken, rice & vege.

17th Jan Tuesday
07:55 - Out of Bed
Breakfast:
Cereal.
Start farm worked 08:30
Helped move the Herd back into the paddock, after morning milking.
Covered over patch work on the pipe in the bull paddock.
Clean + hose down 'Dairy'.
Lunch:
Meat + Cheese on Toast and a Carrot lol. Hungry!
About 45min
Start farm work.
Helped Brad and Rick. Shoveling all afternoon. Clearing dirt from around new trough's ready for plumbing.
Moved 'Herd'. Start 15:40.
After all the contractor's with all the machinery, trucks and utes. Alot of the gates and fences were down.
So had to put all the gates back in place, so that the cows didn't end up walking to Perth or Sydney ha!
It was 38 degrees today. Working in this heat, is near impossible for a townie boy, who is use to rain 24/7 and cool tempertures.
Finished farm work:
IDK when I was so *beep*. Once back at the house, sat down on the seats outside in the shade for what seemed like a long time. Maybe 10/15 min's.
I'm exhausted. I wonder what heat exhaustion is like? Or the early stages.
Brought in 1 load of washing. Hung 1 load out.
Had a good fun chat with Robyn and Ben. Having a big winge about life on the farm.
Everything here makes life difficult or hard in some way!
How good can planning get? When your already exhuasted from the day before. What a struggle? And I havent even been here long.
Tea:
Chicken Snitzel, Pasta and Salad. Very nice! Crisp crucnhy and COLD!!
Pudding:
Cyclone ice block! :-) So GOOD!

16th Jan Monday
07:15 - Woke up
07:15 - Out of Bed
Breakfast:
Toast, Netulla.
Start farm worked 08:30.
Grubbing/Pulling/Spraying Thistle
Moving Bull's onto truck for transport was interesting, to say the least.
Aggressive fighting bull's. Limited fencing. Silly radios that fall out of closed pocket's from the chest iof my overalls. Grrr! Get communication now, the radio part. Besides the radio battery, which only the clip is attached too! Is still in the long grass. Where the bull was pushed/headbutted after it had been fighting with another bull. And went through the fence after it had left the bull paddock.
Started the trenching work with Brad. Meet Rick before lunch.
Lunch: time idk.
Had toast, salami and cheese. Break for about 20min.
Most of the afternoon helped Rick trenching, laying piping for the new troughs.
Australian attitude to work I have noticed here. Is "that will do". Things could be done alot better with some little thought, to what will happen and what could happen.
For example, laying a pipe and refilling it with the coarse gravel that is used for the laneway.
After the conversation's I heard they came up with plenty of good ideas. Eg surronding the pipe with sand. For preserving the life of the pipe we just layed. But no, thats too hard and can't be bothered. So well just leave it how it is. Instead of being prepared. Btw the laneway with the coarse gravel was put there by the guy's I was working with. It's not like they didn't know the condition and type of rock which is the make up of the laneway. Typical half assed though & design!
Say they did surround the the pipe with sand under the laneway. The pipe wouldn't need repairing everytime the gravel punctured the pipe. If you don't think thats likely?
I'd like to see you put your finger/hand/foot/arm/leg under gravel and pipe then get the herd of cows walk ontop of you and the pipe. And see what happens?
Finished Farm work.
idk alot later than I should have. But I'm here to help Ben.
And that includes not destroying the local relationships with the labour force in this area. All controlled by the same people. But that's another Australian issue. I can address another day.
Why can't things be simple? And not done in such a way that people so busy they never get a rest?
Arrh I think I see why the working class in Australia seems so wealthy.
I'm exhausted. Had another look for that radio tonight. Well at least I know where it's not now.
Tea:
BBQ Steak, Mashed Potato, Veges.
Pudding:
What pudding, haha!

(-38.715326,146.090012)(-38.715787,146.089958)(-38.715075,146.091846)(-38.714648,146.091396)(-38.713526,146.091535)
Finish work: 14:20.
Lunch: 14:30 till 15:__?
Sandwhich. TV.
Start farm work: 16:__? till 17:20
Tiny bit of help in 'Dairy', may as well have not been there.
Roamed new paddocks, scouting to see what Ben wanted to be done.
Moved portable fence, from P#3 to P#_?. Around the hay bails. Collected another portable fence P#_?
And closed wire gate.
"Still not sure what he [Ben] wanted done" Hope it was right. I'll have to ask once he's finished at 'Dairy' :-|
Blog Draft - 18:20
Finish work: 17:20
Tea:
BBQ Chicken, Tomato + Cheese. Cheese was the fancy salty cheese from the Victorian Markets. :-)
It was so yummy! Our chicken dish, with mashed potato and veges.
Found out just before tea, that Ben didnt want the cows in the paddock I allowed them to use. Dam!
Shouldn't have left them in the paddock that was cut for hay. Next time should use a little discreation to where the cows
might want to be. And where Ben wants the cows to be, so they are easier to move toward and into 'Dairy'.
It takes a hour to move the herd from the back paddocks back into 'Dairy'. Yawn!!!
Watching Jaws :-) hehe they're fishing for the biggy!

Sandwhich - Salad + Ham. Plastered feet - getting blisters.
Finish - 13:20.
Start farm work. From 13:45/40 ish, till 15:35.
('Paddick No#' 'P#')
x(many) Grub/Pull - Thistle P#: 3,4, lease land
(-38.721546,146.082662) (-38.722115,146.083832) (-38.713644,146.093262)

Dam cheeky! Jersy cows, one in particular being sneeky and turning around from flow of herd. When my back was turned. Repeatedly.
Herd in 'Dairy' yard 16:10/15 ish.
Assited movement within 'Dairy'.
Many discussions between Ben and I, about a thistle plant. In P#4, after I have riden past it many times today.
I think we have a mystery thistle, or just a lack of decent communication and looking properly.
Possibly for both, for both parties.
Re-position temporary hay bail fence. From P#4 to P#3.
Ben: No help wanted on 'Dairy'
Finished Farm work 17:00.
Almost fell asleep writing draft blog. A few times :-) lol. 17:15 - 17:27.

8th Jan Sun
8th Jan Sunday
08:00 Out of Bed - Didnt wake up once during the night. But tired tried to back to sleep.
Breakie with Robyn + Ben.
Starting to understand the drama's they have been put in.
"I need to help them as much as possible. As they have a never ending shit storm on their hands."
Dishes done ? - Vacumming done 10:10
Mentioned to Robyn + Ben about: (way things are done)
In a panic. Raising Voice. Emergency.
(in my head): - State of Mind
- Getting worked up
(foregetting things later)
(never ending brain fatigue)
(take time 2 chill+relax in the moment)
(AVPU, etc. simple steps to get things done without all the little hiccups)
I feel things could be done differently. Seems alot like being back at home in Taupo, with parents. Extra drama's for no reason.
Just had a look around the shed with Robyn. She was taking info off, 'Dairy' computer. About calving dates, 8 cows.
'Dairy' name of the shed layout/setup for milking.
Morning Tea:
Ben cracked open the Choc+Peanut cookies. Dam! I choose those at the supermarket, Foster.
Because I thought he would turn his nose up.
Sandwhich's 4 lunch. Ham+Salad.
Computer. Blog. Emails. Facebook.
13:50 - Just noticed big briuse+lump from moving the cabient with Nathan + Jade. lol how clumsy am I?
Gonna have to look after my feet well tomorrow. Cuts from my surf fins still haven't healed. Grrr!
And the plaster's Robyn suggested are pretty silly too! Not long enough for these cuts. I start to see how communication, sight and understanding is so important!
Been outside since lunch! :-)
Moved herd into 'Diary' yard.
'Dairy' - Milked the herd.
- Learnt how to put on tit sucker thingy.
- 'Red' cow, on antibotics, not for tank supply. But still milked so doesn't dry out.
- 'Blue' cow, injections required
- 'Green' cow, algud. and ok!
- using automatic feed (grain) while milking.
('Dairy' has a electronic database of cows. Recording all thier details.
Including: Last Calving, Last Test, Litres, Fat, Fat%, Prot, Prot%, Term Date.
- I was weary of my arms, hands and fingers around the cows during milking.
I wanna have everything in working order when, I go back to home 4 uni. I was probably too careful!
(Ben+Robyn gave me a few tips about speed effieceny around the cows in 'Dairy')
(feeling rather than looking) (looking = kicked in the face by 1600kg cow. Ouch!)
- House down the 'Dairy' + yard.
- Hay bails on paddick 4 freshly milked herd.
- Ben showed me the spraying, grubbing, and pulling of thistle and wragwort over the farm.
Plenty of it. In the annoying hard to reach places. Plenty of long grass surronding it too! Ekk! :-(
- Back to the house, covered in cow shit! :-) Great for the skin! ha
Chicken burito's for tea :-) Yum!

Flight: NZ123
08:20am Departure (Auckland time)
10:20am Arrival (Melbourne time)
My flight was good, but pretty bad preparation, all last minute.
Not enough food + water = grumpy/tired/intolerant/headache Sam. Although during my flight I had a nice Australian couple, on my right, who were returning from their holiday in NZ. They were about 30-40's ish. However in front of us, what sounded like an American family, who were very dilingent with their please and thank you's. But were defiantly the most wealthy inconsiderate ignorant people I've ever had to listen and tolerate, in such a small vivacity with.
The food was ok, small portion's = usual. But tasted better than I expected, quiche tomato sausage and fruit side. Had three cups of water but should have taken a drink bottle.
During the early parts of the flight I noticed that the next to me, she was watching a some sort of film, and thought it might be interesting, so was nossy enough to ask. Haha, she told me it was called, Sarah's Key. (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1668200/ , if anyone's interested). Interesting doco/film, about the inhuman treatment of Jewish people during WW2 time, Paris, but not Hitler, French doing.
Melbourne Airport is Massive! During and just before landing I recognised, Austrlaian Airport and Runway Planning, that I have seen before, on Horn Island, (Torres Strait, north of Cape York, Queensland). Large Grass Barrier Zones, and Gum tree lines.
Robyn (big sis) was waiting for me in the arrivals. Got through Customs easy as! Staff were very impressed with my cleaning job, found out. Sports and Footwear precautions are due to didymo in NZ. (http://www.biosecurity.govt.nz/didymo).
Melbourne Shopping: (with Robyn)
Melbourne Shopping: (with Robyn)
- Is crazy, way too busy! When your tired. (loved the country once, I got out there, quiet and time to think :-) )
- 'macpac', picked up Ben’s (brother inlaw) new hunting jacket
- Great Food. Went to Robyn’s favourite take out, Stalactites Resturant. Got lunch and dinner, Yummy!
- Victorian Markets, really liked it. Real touristy destination. Heaps of people taking photos. Weird and wonderful people :-). But didn’t feel like a real market to me, not like I’m use too. In Queensland and NZ. Also was really expensive. By this time, I was really quite tired.
- Mattress – Picked up from Harvey Norman in Cranbourne. Queen, folded this thing in half and pushed it into the back of Robyn’s Mazda 6 Sedan. Must have looked like a bunch of wolly’s squeezing it in.
- Horse Power, picked up Robyn’s new horse’s bridle and reins
- Then drove to my new Home.
(I just found today that, I left my usb cord for my phone in NZ. Dam it!)
But along the way, lots of brown grass, very tall on the side of the road. Waist height on me in some places! And people wonder why there are fires in Australia, and why it happens so often and so horribly! After just a few moments in Australia, I realised what such a little task. Which I was told has been negliected, could and would make a huge difference in destruction of those and many areas. It’s just like a full match box here, waiting for a spark! And the local councils contract out, to control the grass levels, what a JOKE!
But as we drove through the hills leading up to Fish Creek and out of Buffalo, the grass started becoming greener.
- Explored the new house, I was expecting a run down farm house, from the apperance on the outside, and the general condition of the rest of the property. But found a very nice old high ceiling timber framed house! Wooden everything. Just the way I like it! Wooden architraves, window sashes! Etc.
- Pets:
Dog: Ziggy
Cat: Kitty
Dog: Ziggy
Cat: Kitty
I have done a bit of exploring mainly around the house and a few photos + a video of the house. But without the cord ain’t much help.
